2021 NHL Odds and Betting

The 2021-2022 NHL season is scheduled to start on Tuesday Oct. 12, with the Tampa Bay Lightning facing off against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Lightning will be raising their Stanley Cup banner, celebrating an impressive 2021 season in which they rolled through the Stanley Cup Finals, beating the Montreal Canadiens in five games. The Lightning vs. Penguins game is the first of an opening night double-header, and it’ll be followed by the first ever game for the Seattle Kraken, who will be on the road against the Vegas Golden Knights.

The NHL is up to 32 two teams with the Kraken joining as an expansion team, and the 2021-2022 conferences and divisions will have a different layout to coincide with the changes. There weren’t actually any conferences in the 2021 season due to adjustments around COVID restrictions, as the NHL decided to go with four distinct divisions who played entire schedules within their own divisions. There are still four divisions for the 2021-2022 season, but they will once again be a part of the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference, and the schedule will go back to including inter-divisional games.

The Colorado Avalanche open the season as the Stanley Cup favorites, with a line set at +475. There’s a clear gap between them and the teams with the next lowest odds, as the Lightning and the Golden Knights are both +700, and the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins are behind them at +900 and +1300. Last season’s Hart Trophy winner Connor McDavid opens as the clear favorite to repeat as MVP at +200, with Nathan MacKinnon and Auston Matthews somewhat far behind at +650 and +950.
