MLB odds indicate potential payouts using the (+) and (-) symbols to represent the odds.
The opening line is the first betting line for an MLB game. Opening lines can change as more bets are placed and new information becomes available, such as starting pitcher announcements, injuries, lineup changes, or weather updates.
A typical MLB odds sheet may look something like this:
Team | Run Line | Over/Under Totals | Moneyline Odds |
New York | -1.5 / +135 | 8.5 / -110 - O | -145 |
Boston | +1.5 / -155 | 8.5 / -110 - U | +125 |
Moneylines, run lines, and over/under totals can all show a positive (+) or negative (-) odds indicator.
A quick way to understand American odds is to look at the plus or minus sign.
The (+) represents the underdog and shows how much a $100 winning bet would earn in profit. For example, a $100 bet on a +125 underdog would win $125, for a total payout of $225.
The (-) represents the favorite and shows how much you need to wager to win $100 in profit. For example, a -145 favorite means you would need to wager $145 to win $100.
In either case, if your bet wins, you also receive your original stake back.
You don't have to bet exactly $100 or the amount shown in the odds. Using $100 simply makes it easier to understand the potential payout.
For example, a $20 bet on a +125 underdog would win $25 in profit, for a total payout of $45. A $29 bet on a -145 favorite would win approximately $20 in profit, for a total payout of approximately $49.

A point spread, also known as a runline in baseball, is the amount by which a team is favored to win. Runlines are commonly set at 1.5. However, DraftKings allows alternative lines that are based on the matchup. If you think your favorite team is going to win big on a given day, bet on them to beat the spread!
If a team is listed as +1.5, it means they are the underdog. For example, if the Toronto Blue Jays are playing the New York Mets, and the Blue Jays are listed at -1.5, they need to win by two or more runs to cover the spread. If the Mets are listed at +1.5, they need to either lose by just one run or win the game to cover the spread.
An MLB moneyline bet is a bet on which team will win the game outright. The margin of victory doesn’t matter, only the final result. Each team is assigned moneyline odds, which determine the potential payout for a winning bet. Favorites typically have negative odds, while underdogs typically have positive odds.
A three-way moneyline gives three possible outcomes to bet on: Team A wins, Team B wins, or the two teams tie. Three-way moneylines are bets on nine innings, since a MLB game can’t end in a tie. If the two teams are tied after nine innings, it’s considered a tie for the three-way moneyline bet, and the winner in extra innings doesn’t matter.
Also known as Totals, MLB over/under bets focus on the total score of teams in the individual MLB game. For example, if the over/under of the Mets vs. Blue Jays game is set at 8.5, that means the teams would have to score a combined nine runs or more to be considered over. Eight or less and the under bettors are winners.
Player prop bets are wagers on a specific MLB player’s performance in a game. For example, betting on if a player hits a home run in any given game.MLB player props available on DraftKings may vary by game and jurisdiction. Depending on availability, MLB player props may include:
Batter props: Bet on individual aspects of a batter's performance, including home runs, hits, total bases, RBIs, and stolen bases.
Home runs: Pick whether a specific batter will hit a home run during the game.
Hits: Bet on whether a batter will record a certain number of hits in a game.
Total bases: Wager on the number of total bases a batter will record, with singles, doubles, triples, and home runs each counting toward the total.
RBIs: Bet on whether a batter will record a certain number of runs batted in during the game.
Stolen bases: Pick whether a player will record a stolen base during the game.
Pitcher props: Follow a starting pitcher's performance with wagers on stats such as strikeouts and outs recorded.
Strikeouts: Bet on whether a pitcher will record a certain number of strikeouts during the game.
Outs recorded: Wager on how many outs a pitcher will record before leaving the game.
To record a win: Pick whether a pitcher will “record a win” for the game.
In a parlay, two or more bets are combined into a single wager. All selections in the parlay must win for the parlay to win. Adding more selections changes the odds and can increase the potential payout.
Parlays can include all kinds of bets, such as runlines, moneylines, or over/unders. Check out our How to Bet 101 guide for an example of a parlay bet.
MLB futures are wagers on the entire season, or remainder of the season if it's in progress. The most popular MLB futures bet is who will win the World Series. Futures typically pay well because it’s tough to select a winner months in advance. A lot can change in a season, from trades to injuries. The beauty of futures is they add excitement to the overall season instead of a single game, so you can remain invested all season long.
There are no games bigger in baseball than the World Series. The annual, best-of-seven series crowns the greatest team in the Major League, and games are tense, action-packed, and filled with emotion. Make the biggest event in the sport even more exciting with a wager.
To get to the World Series, MLB teams need to get through multiple rounds of playoffs. With rivalries and elimination on the line, these multi-game series are some of the best games baseball has to offer.
You can bet on MLB regular season games with DraftKings and find a variety of ways to add excitement to every game. Regular season games help determine which teams make it to the MLB playoffs, giving every matchup added importance as the season progresses.
