      What is a Point Spread?

A point spread (also referred to as line or handicap) is a bet on the margin of victory in a game. The stronger team or player will be favored by a certain number of points.

Interpreting point spread odds involves understanding the numbers and symbols associated with the bet. The favorite is indicated by a negative number, such as -5.5, while the underdog is shown with a positive number, like +5.5. This means that the favorite must win by more than the indicated number of points, whereas the underdog must win or lose by fewer points than the given number.

A spread will look similar to this:

      Team

      Spread

      Team A

      -5.5

      Team B

      +5.5

      Team

      Spread

      Team A

      -5.5

      Team B

      +5.5

In this example, Team A has to win by 6 or more points to win/cover a bet placed on them. For the opposing team, Team B, a bet on them pays out if they lose by 5 points or fewer. This also includes if team B wins the game.

Finally, should you bet on a spread that is a whole number, such as -6/+6, these bets can have three outcomes. They can win, lose, or draw/void. For example, if the spread for Team A is -6, in order to win this bet you would need them to win by 7 or more. A win for Team A of 6 points will cause your bet to void and your wager amount to be refunded as it was even with the spread. Should Team A win by 5 or less this will result in your bet being settled as a loss.
